In the chilling world of Five Nights at Freddy's, the narrative unfolds across decades, weaving a tapestry of trauma, lingering spirits, and the insidious grip of a malevolent force. The story begins in 1981 at the inaugural Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a place meant for childhood joy that quickly becomes a stage for unspeakable horror. A young girl named Charlotte, portrayed by Audrey Lynn Marie, sits alone, anticipating the animatronics’ performance. Her only solace is her friend, Vanessa (Miriam Spumpkin), who attempts to draw her into the boisterous atmosphere of a birthday party. However, Charlotte’s attention is captured by William Afton, also known as Spring Bonnie, played by Matthew Lillard, as he leads a young boy into a secluded back room. Despite Charlotte’s desperate pleas for help, the adults remain oblivious to her distress. Driven by a desperate need to intervene, she ventures into the back room herself, only to be pursued by Afton. Charlotte emerges from the stage, the boy in tow, and lets out a piercing scream before succumbing to fatal stab wounds. As she collapses, she is caught by The Marionette, an animatronic that becomes a vessel for her lingering spirit.
Fast forward to 2001, and Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) is jolted awake by a phone call from Mike (Josh Hutcherson), confirming their dinner plans. Abby (Piper Rubio), Mike’s younger sister, believes Mike harbors romantic feelings for Vanessa, a notion he dismisses, insisting they are merely friends. The shadow of their past ordeal at Freddy Fazbear’s looms large. Abby, a year removed from the traumatic events, finds herself missing the animatronics – Freddy, Chica, Bonnie, and Foxy. Mike, however, is determined to help her move forward.
At school, Abby recounts her experiences with the animatronics, eliciting mixed reactions from her peers. Some find her peculiar, while others are captivated, especially with the resurgence of interest in Freddy’s, marked by an event called “FazFest.” Abby’s desire to participate in an upcoming robotics competition is met with resistance from her teacher, Mr. Berg (Wayne Knight). He discourages her entry, fearing her obsession with the animatronics might bring embarrassment to the school.
Later, Mike and Vanessa meet for dinner, and it's evident that both are grappling with profound emotional scars. Upon returning home, Mike discovers that Abby has left, driven by a mission to “fix her friends.” He finds her at the desolate ruins of the Freddy’s location where their harrowing experiences took place. After coaxing her away from the wreckage, Abby discovers a Faz-Speaker toy, which she brings home.
Meanwhile, a trio of paranormal YouTubers – Lisa (Mckenna Grace), Alex (Teo Briones), and Rob (David Andrew Calvillo) – arrive at the original Freddy’s, guided by an enigmatic man (Freddy Carter). As they explore the eerily still animatronics and split up, Alex meets a gruesome end, torn apart by an unseen force. Rob suffers a similar fate, perishing in the river moat ride. Lisa then becomes the target of The Marionette, her body manipulated like a puppet. The mysterious guide addresses The Marionette as Charlotte, welcoming her back.
Vanessa’s post-traumatic stress disorder escalates to a critical point, leading her to brandish a gun at someone in a gym. That night, she experiences a terrifying nightmare where she is pursued by Afton. In her dream, she shoots him off a balcony, but he continues to taunt her, his presence undeterred.
Abby begins to hear the Faz-Speaker communicating with her, guiding her towards the animatronics. She embarks on a bike ride to the original Freddy’s, where she is greeted by Toy Chica, voiced by Megan Fox.
Vanessa learns of Abby’s whereabouts and attempts to alert Mike. However, Mike reveals he has found a flyer with a phone number and has spoken to Charlotte’s father, Henry (Skeet Ulrich). Henry alluded to Vanessa’s connection with Charlotte, prompting Vanessa to explain her past visits to Charlotte’s ghost at the original Freddy’s, where she tried to help her find peace. This revelation erodes Mike’s trust in Vanessa.
Abby brings a newly designed robotic doll, modeled after Chica, to school for her robotics project. Mr. Berg, seizing an opportunity, fabricates an excuse to take the doll and deliberately drops it, intending to remove Abby from the competition. Undeterred, Abby retrieves Toy Chica to present as her project. However, Toy Chica informs Abby that a specific code is required to enable her, Toy Freddy (voiced by Kellen Goff), and Toy Bonnie (voiced by MatPat) to leave the premises. Vanessa, who has already gone to Freddy’s to confront Charlotte, is apprehended by The Marionette. The animatronic threatens Abby’s life, forcing Vanessa to divulge the security code. Once successful, The Marionette discards Lisa’s body, having no further use for it.
Mike seeks out Henry at his home, where he learns that Henry had been denouncing the Freddy’s chain even before the child murders at other locations occurred. Henry entrusts Mike with a music box, which he used to lull Charlotte to sleep, hoping it might bring her spirit rest.
At school, Abby presents Toy Chica, but Mr. Berg accuses her of orchestrating a deception that could jeopardize the school’s donations. Toy Chica then stalks Mr. Berg, ultimately crushing his head. Meanwhile, Toy Freddy makes an appearance at FazFest, captivating the crowd before setting off to find new targets.
Mike infiltrates the original Freddy’s to access the computers. He discovers the prototype animatronic bodies. After freeing Vanessa, he uses the computer to track the animatronics, all of whom are under the control of Charlotte/The Marionette. Vanessa pursues them, while Mike remains behind, defending himself with a discarded Freddy mask.
Toy Bonnie and Toy Freddy roam the neighborhood, targeting adults. Charlotte’s rage is directed at the adults who ignored her pleas, leading to her tragic fate. The prototypes begin to animate, with Prototype Foxy attacking Vanessa. Toy Freddy attempts to attack a couple, but Vanessa intervenes, causing the animatronics to collide before safely extracting the couple. Mike manages to deactivate the animatronics before they can reach him. However, one remains, heading towards his house. Mike makes a stop at the Freddy’s where he previously worked, hoping to rally the classic animatronics to protect Abby if they truly care for her.
The Marionette emerges from Toy Chica’s chest and possesses Abby just as Mike arrives. Vanessa is taken to the house by Mike’s friend Jeremiah (Theodus Crane). The Marionette attacks Vanessa until Mike plays the music box, forcing it to relinquish Abby’s body. The mysterious man from earlier appears, revealing himself as Michael Afton, Vanessa’s estranged brother, who intends to continue their father’s sinister legacy, exploiting Charlotte’s ghost for his malevolent purposes. Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, and Prototype Foxy launch an assault on the house. However, the original four animatronics arrive to dismantle the attackers and shield Abby. Jeremiah incapacitates Michael as he attempts to escape. Tragically, the bodies of the classic animatronics can no longer withstand their prolonged absence from Freddy’s, allowing the spirits of the murdered children to finally cross over. One of the spectral boys warns Mike that with their departure, they can no longer contain Afton’s spirit, and he will return with amplified power. Michael also vanishes.
Jeremiah escorts Mike and Abby away from the house. Mike instructs Vanessa to stay away from them, his trust shattered by her concealment of Michael’s actions. As they depart, The Marionette possesses Vanessa’s body.
During the post-credit sequence, three teenagers explore another Freddy’s location and discover Springtrap’s body in a hidden chamber Mike had secured. As they attempt to move him, Springtrap’s eyes flicker to life. At the very end of the credits, a voice message from Henry is heard. He reveals his past association with Afton as a business partner and issues a dire warning about Charlotte’s ghost.
